There are many books on color theory and of those, a few have exercises you can do at home. What’s different about this one is that its activities and exercises have been designed around the needs of the adult students I have taught for more than ten years. During that time, I have been listening to my students’ questions about color, and developing activities that can help them think about color and apply this knowledge to their own projects.
Some charts address specific color mixing skills: How do you mix secondary colors? Blacks and browns? The green I just saw? What muted colors can I make with this set of primaries? How do I dull down a color? How can I replicate a color?
Others try to develop an awareness of the way painters organize or manipulate color: What palette shall I use for this subject? Which background works best for this element? How will these colors work together? What color harmony is best for my painting? What palette did this artist use?
Color Mixing Charts for Painters is not a book about color theory. Its activities encourage insight into the process of making color decisions. Its instructions are written in plain language so that you can follow them on your own. You can print each chart, complete it, and collect them in a binder with your notes, or you can keep the book as a reference as you copy its charts in a sketchbook.
