Make RPAL Your Pal
The design I developed with them felt a lot like a family portrait because of how the figures were arranged (complete with a Yorkie that had been RPAL’s mascot). There was much back and forth conversation as the youth researched the symbols they wanted included: a spiral, stars, the rising sun, and daisies and dandelions.
Shipping Container Mural
Designing a mural for a one-day painting event is not as straightforward as it seems. The actual mural was of course much brighter colored than the colored design. We had about seven youth and five adults paint. I am sure it was a very fun day for everyone who was involved!
Documenting the Pullman Mural
Robin D. López, a local photographer and activist, filmed a documentary, #RichmondSpeaks - “Social & Cultural Connections of The Greenway” featuring several local leaders such as Doria Robinson from Urban Tilth, Najari Smith from Rich City Rides, Anselmo Ramirez from Moving Forward 510, Patrick Phelan from Dirt World and yours truly. In Robin’s piece, I was interviewed and asked about the Pullman Park mural project - how the idea developed, who helped us and its impact.
The Humble Gel Print
Every winter I take advantage of the rainy weather to retreat to my studio, where I make gel prints for the whole year. Since I like to work large, I melt all of the smaller gel plates I use for workshops and use the glycerin/gelatin mix to cast a 22 x 16 x 4″ plate using my own recipe. It’s a Wrap!
On the day we met to celebrate completion (against all odds) of the Essential Workers of the Pullman Neighborhood mural, a group of youth showed up, those who had painted. Some were with their parents and approached the mural slowly, pointing out something in the middle. They wanted to see if it was intentional.
A Walking Tour With The Radical Monarchs
On a sunny Sunday afternoon, we met at the location of the first mural they wanted to see, Healing Waters for Our Sons and Daughters, by Vanessa Espinoza (Agana), Keena Romano and Leslie López (Dime). The mural, created on a wall part of a community clinic, was part of the Bay Area Mural Festival that took place in 2017.
East Bay Express Article!
Thanks to curator Jenny Balisle and also to Bridge Art Space communications staff Iris Allroy, the work of many Richmond artists is being featured in our local news. Art of An Inflection Point discusses the three oil paintings I have in the Bridge The Ballot group show until November 9, 2020.
Artist Project
Working with fellow artist Carmen D. Meléndez and several community members, we designed several banners as part of my artist project for the Richmond Art Center. One of them , the largest, was entirely in Spanish. It read, Las vidas negras valen lo mismo que la tuya y la mía.
