Feels Like Home: Work by Rebeca García-González

Bienvenida Meza is a Richmond environmental educator who I have long admired. Her portrait will be part of a show of my work next to my new mural in the Kato Jaworski Community Gallery at the Richmond Art Center. The opening reception will be on Saturday, January 22, but if you want to avoid crowds, it will be ready for viewing on Thursday, January 20. Admission is free!

We Found Joy In Art-Making

Such is the name of my newest mural, welcoming those who enter the Richmond Art Center through its 25th St entrance. The 37 foot-long interior mural shows people of all ages making art, and enjoying the Center’s exhibitions. The mural was commissioned by Blue Shield California and will be unveiled during the Richmond Art Center’s winter show opening reception on Saturday, January 22, 4-6 pm. Save the date! The Center’s galleries are also open on Thursdays and Fridays, if you want to avoid crowds due to Covid. Please visit this page to check their hours before you go.

This is a five-week online class starting Tues Jan 4 and ending Feb 1, from 1-3 pm. Learn about the vast possibilities of acrylic as a painting medium. Discover additives that can change paint texture, thickness and opacity. Plan how to use layers and drying time to enrich your colors and textures. Short, engaging discussions, and exercises to do in and out of class are designed to teach you about acrylic technique through demonstrations, feedback and your own in-class painting experience. Paint still lives during class, set up your own at home, or work with references on your own projects. This class is not offered through the Richmond Art Center, so please register using the button below. $220

Choosing and Mixing Color Class

Choosing and mixing color is a practical class aimed at the painter with beginning or intermediate skills who wants to learn how to pick pigments for palettes, mix more challenging colors, and how to plan a color harmony. This remote afternoon class starts on Wednesday Jan 12. It runs from 6-9 pm, is five sessions long and ends Feb 9. Use the media of your choice. Bring your own painting project, paint a still life or work from your references in order to apply (and remember) these color concepts. Develop valuable reference tools you will use for the rest of your life. $220

Fundamental Drawing Class
Parts 1 and 2

An online class for absolute beginners where you will learn how to plan a drawing, how to figure out a composition, and how to measure the proportions of objects. Use light and shadow, perspective, and various surface treatments during this four-week class. We will draw still lives with objects found around the house, and discuss our work. All students will receive individual feedback. Part I begins Jan 5. Part II begins on Feb 2. This set of two four-week classes is offered via Zoom by the Richmond Art Center, on Wednesdays from 1-3 pm. Check the Richmond Art Center’s description of this class for the list of materials.
