New Work

February 2022

You are invited to the opening reception of 12 Plein Air Painters on Sunday, February 20, from 4-6:00 PM. My painting of Lake Merritt will be in excellent company, next to work by these eleven artists: Sue Collins, Alex Connor, Linda Dittes, Sharon Hind-Smith, Glen Jarvis, Joan Martin, Judith Mortensen, Jeanette Nichols, María Saxton, Jane Sneed and Diana Yoshida. In other words, this show is a great opportunity to see a variety of styles and approaches to all of the East Bay views you love. I believe most of the work will be for sale. Thank you so much to María Saxton, coordinator of the East Bay Landscape Painters group for inviting me.

The Berkeley Yacht Club is located at 1 Seawall Drive, Berkeley. The show runs from February 20 to April 13, 2022. Admission is free.

Richmond Art Center Show Updates

The closing reception of Feels Like Home will take place on Sunday, March 13, from 12-2 PM. It is free and open to the public!

And if if you haven’t yet visited, gallery visiting hours are: Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10am-2pm. There are postcards of the mural at the front desk, with a photo taken by Richmond photographer Robin D. López.

Good news if you have stopped using FB and other social media: I livestreamed a discussion of both the mural and the exhibition in Spanish and English, and uploaded them to my YouTube channel. The longest one is 12 minutes. Learn more about the process that led to the mural and also, the connection of those images to the RAC’s culture and history. The exhibition of Richmond paintings also makes sense when you hear about what these places have in common, and about my working methods. Those of you who live outside the Bay Area will enjoy learning about the city of Richmond.

Protest Signs Exhibition In NC

Two of the banners I designed for an artist project back in 2020 have been selected from among 230 submissions for a show titled Protest Signs, held at the CAB Gallery at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington. The exhibit’s description is short and eloquent: “Anger and grief have gripped our city, our state, and our country. Voices have risen, our community has protested, and demonstrators have created passionate, poignant messages that are projected through their signs. Handmade, printed, painted, drawn with a marker, put on a board…these signs tell a powerful story. It is the time for these stories to be heard.” The exhibition opens Feb 24.

The artist project was part of a grant awarded by the Richmond Art Center. I wanted to create an opportunity for people in Richmond and Afro-Latinos in particular, to come together to create banners that could speak to Richmond residents. A group of us gathered on a Saturday morning at the beginning of the pandemic, and painted three beautiful banners. It is great to see their message and execution are appreciated in other places!

Intermediate Drawing Class In March

Explore shading, foreshortening, perspective and composition. Get better at reviewing and editing your drawings in this online class. Longer drawing times allows for reflection and additional instructor feedback as you work through individual challenges. Use the drawing media of your choice as you complete optional assignments at home, designed to reinforce what you learn. We'll cover working from photo references. This remote night class starts on Wednesday March 2. It runs from 6-8 pm, is four sessions long and ends Feb 23.

Save This Date

My Open Studio Date will begin Friday, May 27, 11-4 pm, and will feature work done in Hawaii as well as several new East Bay paintings.
