I Have Cancelled My Open Studio

After much reflection, I took the difficult decision to cancel my winter open studio, which I was going to hold on Dec 14-15. A few factors came into play. The most important one? I had to accept that I was not going to have sufficient time to prepare. This fall I’ve had three jobs, I have been leading the Visual Artists of Richmond, and trying to get a major public art project off the ground. I am not complaining. On the contrary, it’s been an exciting and at times wild year, but there has clearly been too much going on and I need time to rest and recover. I am sorry because I know many of you look forward to my open studio and want to support my work.

If you are looking for holiday gifts, you can purchase my gliceé prints and card sets this Sunday Dec 8 at the Richmond Art Center’s Holiday Arts Festival. Or, if you are looking for originals, I am taking studio visit appointments.

I will have a table at the Richmond Art Center with 50 other artists from 10:00 AM to 4:00 pm on Sunday, Dec 8. The RAC is located at 2540 Barrett Ave. Come by my table to purchase sets of cards or gicleé prints, or just say hi. It will be fun! And like I said above, if you are interested in originals, you can always make an appointment to visit my studio in person.

There’s nothing like the desert to put you in a reflective mode. I had the opportunity to visit Death Valley recently (it was a birthday gift from my partner) and brought acrylics because we were traveling around in a van with my niece and her husband and there wasn’t a lot of space. The stars at night, the absence of trees and the ability to see at great distances gets you to contemplate your life in the context of this vast universe. Waiting a couple days before I begin painting has always allowed me to absorb my surroundings well enough to create something that evokes that mood. I call it “painting with my mind” and I have been doing it since I can remember. It is not merely enjoying the aesthetic aspects or meditating, but feeling the place. At Death Valley, this meant remembering our own insignificance and fragility in this harsh environment.
